What is OHS?
Occupational health and safety (OHS or OH&S) refers to the legislation, policies, procedures and activities that aim to protect the health, safety and welfare of all people at the workplace.
Every worker has a right to work in a healthy and safe work environment that enables him or her to live a socially and economically productive life.
It is the responsibility of employers, small and large, to identify what is required to make their workplace safer. Direct employers, self-employed people, those in control of work premises, machinery and substances, designers, manufacturers, suppliers and workers all have obligations with regard to workplace health, safety and welfare.
Who regulates OHS in Australia?
Safe Work Australia, which was established as an Executive Agency on 1 July 2009 to look after the National OHS Strategy. Each state has its own statutory authority for OHS regulations. WorkCover NSW, for instance, is a NSW statutory authority under the portfolio of the Minister for Finance. Its primary objective is to work in partnership with the NSW community to achieve safe workplaces, effective return to work and security for injured workers.
What Legislation Covers Occupational Health and Safety?
The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 (OHS Act 2000) is relevant to all Australian workplaces. It describes the general requirements necessary to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, and is designed to reduce the number of injuries in the workplace by imposing responsibilities on individuals and corporations.
Safety in the workplace is critical to the success of businesses, no matter what size they are.
Knowing and understanding the OHS laws will help your business avoid the unnecessary costs and damage caused by workplace injury and illness.
